Assessment Of Competence

During the programme we have to ensure we assess learners skills, knowledge and behaviours against the Construction Support Technician apprenticeship standard.

Assessment Covers

The apprenticeship standard assesses the apprentices knowledge, skills and behaviours and covers the following;

Knowledge

Construction principles, safety and welfare policies, workplace health, construction terminology, technical drawings, Building Information Modelling (BIM), project tendering, equality and diversity, surveying methods and techniques, the code of conduct, ethical principles, production of technical reports, Management Information Systems (MIS).

Skills

Apply mathematical and technical knowledge, identify risks and hazards, Communication, interpret and abstract contract documentation, digital construction processes, assist with the planning of schedules of work, plan and manage, apply sustainable principles, use information technology, plan and undertake continued professional development and Communicate in written form.

Behaviours

Puts safety first for themselves and others, take personal responsibility for sustainable outcomes, takes ownership of own work, committed to keeping up to date with industry best practice and own professional development.

Tom is one of the tutors that delivers the knowledge based sessions for this standard within the Foundation Diploma.

My responsibility is to deliver sessions that are up-to-date, relevant and the learner can take back to the workplace and add real value to their apprenticeship. We don’t simply teach from a text book, it’s about making all the sessions as meaningful as we can.

Knowledge Delivery

The knowledge delivery is undertaken by completing a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment, whereby we cover the following subjects;-

  • U1 – Construction Principles (BTEC UNIT)
U2 – Construction Design (BTEC UNIT)
U4 – Construction Technology (BTEC UNIT)
U7 – Graphical Detailing (BTEC UNIT)
U11 – Site Engineering for Construction (BTEC UNIT)
U5 – Health and Safety in Construction (BTEC UNIT)
U9 – Management of a Construction Project (BTEC UNIT)
    Contracts and Procurement (Provider-Led Sessions)
    Digital Construction Processes (Provider-Led Sessions)
Professional Memberships, Codes of Conduct, Equality, Diversity and Ethics  (Provider-Led Sessions)

Delivery Methods

Learners will build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their occupational competence, supported by our experienced in-house assessors. Assessments are conducted every 8 to 10 weeks and can take place face-to-face at the employer’s premises or remotely via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), ensuring flexibility and minimal disruption to the workplace.

The BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma is delivered by our qualified BTEC tutors through a day-release model – one day per week during the academic year. Learners have the option to attend sessions in person at our Barnsley centre or participate remotely from anywhere in England via our VLE. The programme supports the development of knowledge and skills relevant to construction support roles, including areas such as estimating, planning, buying and quantity surveying.

The BTEC qualification includes two examinations over the duration of the course, both of which must be completed at our examination centre in Barnsley. One exam is a single-day assessment, while the other spans three days

Site Engineering for construction is delivered over one week from Barnsley.

End Point Assessment

The End-Point Assessment (EPA), is the final stage of the apprenticeship. This is an impartial assessment as to whether your apprentice has gained the required skills, knowledge and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard.

EPA’s are designed by relevant employers in industry to assess the competence of the apprentice at the end of their apprenticeship.

The EPA for the Construction Support Technician apprenticeship standard consists of the following:

Project

A project involves the apprentice completing a significant and defined piece of work that has a real business application and benefit. The project must start after the apprentice has gone through the gateway. It gives the apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the KSBs mapped to this assessment method.

Question and answer session

Apprentices will be required to answer questions based on their project output.

Professional interview with a portfolio of evidence

In the interview, an independent assessor asks the apprentice questions. The apprentice can refer to and illustrate their answers with evidence from their portfolio of evidence. It gives the apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the KSBs mapped to this EPA method.
