What Is An Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships offer a practical way to develop talent within an organisation. They combine real work with training, allowing individuals to earn while they learn.

The employer will have to provide a contract of employment and holiday leave, ensuring apprentices are integrated as valued team members.

Apprenticeships can last between one and six years, depending on the level and the apprentice’s prior experience. Funding is shared between the government and employers: if your annual pay bill exceeds £3 million, you’ll contribute 0.5% through the Apprenticeship Levy.

If your pay bill is under £3 million, you’ll pay just 5% of the training costs, with the government covering the remaining 95%, unless your apprentice is under the age of 22, whereby the government will cover 100% off the cost.

As an apprentice you’ll:

Learn and train for a specific career

Get paid and receive holiday leave

Get hands-on experience in a real job

Study for at least 20% of your working hours

Complete assessments during and at the end of your apprenticeship

Be on a career path with lots of significant potential

Levels of an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships come in various levels, each aligning with specific educational qualifications. While many apprenticeships are accessible, some may require prior qualifications, such as GCSEs in English or maths.

Here’s how apprenticeship levels correspond to educational qualifications:

Apprenticeship Level Equivalent Education Level
Intermediate (Level 2) GCSE
Advanced (Level 3) A Level
Higher (Levels 4-5) Foundation Degree or HNC/HND
Degree (Levels 6-7) Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree

    • No student loans to worry about, your employer and the Government will fund your training
