Celebrating Our Apprentice of the Month: Mia Owen!

10 May 2024

We’re thrilled to spotlight Mia, an Estimator Apprentice at West Lindsey Landscapes. Her apprenticeship journey is a true testament to the power of learning through hands-on experience and personal growth.

Starting her role in May 2023, Mia took the initiative early on, reaching out to the company for a work trial and eventually joined after passing her driving test. She’s since jumped into the role, quickly developing essential skills and taking on responsibilities that reflect her growing confidence.

“I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to learn in a practical, real-world environment rather than feeling the pressure of exams. This path has allowed me to put my knowledge into context, grow my skills, and understand the behaviours needed in the workplace.”

Since joining, Mia has made significant contributions to major projects including:

  • Western Growth Corridor, Phase 1 – Assisting in designing, pricing, and managing the project for Lindum Construction. She attended meetings with both Lindum and the council, playing a key role in gaining planning approval.
  • Ash Tree Close Regeneration Project – Involved in pricing and working phase-by-phase on landscaping, conducting site visits, and helping with technical reporting and drawings.

Her proactive attitude, attention to detail, and strong communication skills didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, she was nominated by her Operations Manager Kellie Gavin for Apprentice of the Year in the Lincolnshire Enterprise Awards 2023, where she became a finalist!

A key figure in her journey has been her Line Manager, Ross Golding, who has provided guidance and support throughout her development.

“Ross has been a huge inspiration. As our Commercial Manager, he’s always taken the time to teach me the ins and outs of estimating and encouraged me to grow in my role. His support has been invaluable. At the start of my apprenticeship, I lacked confidence. Over time, I’ve learned to embrace challenges, manage my own projects, and even lead client meetings. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, both personally and professionally.”

Her journey has also been about learning to bring new ideas to the table and contributing to the company’s growth:

  • “Working alongside experienced colleagues, I’ve been able to introduce fresh knowledge from my studies to the business. It’s rewarding to feel valued and know that my input is helping us stay competitive in an evolving industry.”

“My apprenticeship has taught me that everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how we learn and grow from them that matters. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or share your ideas—you’re there to help the company, and they will appreciate your efforts.”

Looking to the future, Mia is already setting exciting goals:

  • Working towards achieving the ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation to promote sustainability within the company.
  • “In 2025, we plan to bring on an assistant estimator, and I’m looking forward to mentoring them, sharing my knowledge, and helping them grow like I have.”
  • Aspiring to become the Estimating Manager and continue her journey in the industry by taking on further learning and leadership roles.

We couldn’t be prouder of Mia’s dedication, hard work, and future ambitions. She’s a rising star in the construction industry and an inspiration to apprentices everywhere.
